The sports card market in 2026 looks very different from the market of just a few years ago.
Collectors have become more selective. Population reports matter more. Base rookie cards are no longer automatically viewed as scarce assets. At the same time, demand for iconic players, recognizable rookie cards, low-numbered parallels, refractors and autographs remains extremely strong.
There is also a major changing of the guard happening among manufacturers. Topps returned as the NBA and NBPA's exclusive licensed trading-card partner for the 2025-26 season, and in April 2026 Topps also became the NFL and NFLPA's official exclusive trading-card licensee.
That makes 2026 one of the most interesting years in recent memory to build a sports-card collection.
Our ranking isn't simply a list of the most expensive cards. We're looking for a combination of:
-
Player collectibility
-
Long-term legacy potential
-
Rookie-card importance
-
Liquidity
-
Scarcity
-
Current hobby momentum
-
Reasonable upside relative to today's price
Here are our 10 favorite sports cards to target in 2026.
1. Shohei Ohtani — 2018 Topps Chrome Rookie Cards
Cards to Target
2018 Topps Chrome #150 RC
2018 Topps Chrome Update #HMT32 RC
Refractors and numbered parallels whenever budget allows
If we could build a collection around only one active baseball player, Shohei Ohtani would be difficult to pass up.
Ohtani has something almost no other modern athlete possesses: a legitimate chance to become one of the defining athletes of his generation rather than simply one of baseball's best players.
The 2018 rookie class also comes from an attractive period for modern baseball cards—before print runs exploded even further during the hobby boom.
The standard cards offer liquidity, while Chrome Refractors and numbered parallels provide considerably better scarcity.
Recent 2026 sales illustrate how strong the market has become. PSA 10 copies of the 2018 Topps Chrome #150 sold around $1,800-$2,000 in August, while the Chrome Update #HMT32 has recently traded around $1,100-$1,400.
Our preferred buy: Topps Chrome Refractor or Chrome Update Refractor.
Risk: Ohtani already carries an enormous hobby premium. You're buying greatness rather than an undiscovered player.
2026 Rating: 9.7/10
2. Victor Wembanyama — 2023 Panini Prizm #136
Cards to Target
2023 Prizm #136 PSA 10
2023 Prizm Silver #136 PSA 10
Numbered Prizm parallels
Wembanyama may have the highest ceiling of any modern basketball player from both a basketball and hobby perspective.
But there's an important distinction between liking Wemby and buying every Wemby card.
His base Prizm rookie is extremely liquid, but higher-end collectors should strongly consider moving up to the Silver or scarce color.
A Prizm Silver PSA 10 has recently sold roughly in the $2,900-$3,350 range, compared with approximately $400 for a base Prizm PSA 10.
The other interesting angle is historical. Wembanyama's rookie cards came during Panini's licensed NBA era. With Topps now holding the NBA license, his 2023-24 Panini rookies permanently represent that particular era of basketball cards.
Our preferred buy: Prizm Silver PSA 10.
Budget buy: Prizm base PSA 10.
Risk: Expectations are already astronomical. Anything short of an all-time-great career could compress today's premiums.
2026 Rating: 9.6/10
3. Patrick Mahomes — 2017 Panini Prizm #269
Cards to Target
2017 Prizm #269 RC
Red White & Blue Prizm
Numbered Prizm parallels
Rookie autographs
Quarterbacks remain the kings of the football-card market, and Mahomes has separated himself from nearly every quarterback of his generation from a hobby perspective.
Unlike buying an unproven rookie quarterback, buying Mahomes is primarily a bet on legacy accumulation.
Super Bowls, MVPs, statistical milestones and eventually Hall of Fame discussions can continue adding to the story surrounding his rookie cards.
The 2017 Prizm design has also become instantly recognizable.
A Red White & Blue Prizm PSA 10 has recently traded around $3,300-$3,600 in 2026.
At the extreme end, a Gold Prizm rookie autograph numbered to 10 sold for $156,000 in July 2026, illustrating how aggressively the market values genuine scarcity around Mahomes.
Our preferred buy: Prizm parallels rather than the highest-population options.
Risk: Mahomes cards already price in a historically great career.
2026 Rating: 9.4/10
4. Cooper Flagg — 2025-26 Topps Chrome #251
Cards to Target
2025-26 Topps Chrome #251 RC
Chrome Refractor #251
Numbered color
Topps Chrome Rookie Autographs
Cooper Flagg is one of the most fascinating sports-card investments of 2026 because his rookie year coincides with a major change in basketball-card history.
Topps returned as the NBA's fully licensed card manufacturer for the 2025-26 season, making Flagg the headline rookie of the new Topps NBA era.
That gives his flagship Topps Chrome rookie additional historical significance.
As of early September, base Topps Chrome #251 PSA 10s have been selling around $290-$315, with Card Ladder reporting a PSA 10 population already exceeding 4,000.
That population number is precisely why we prefer the Refractor.
Recent PSA 10 Refractors have sold around $2,000-$2,175.
Collectors with larger budgets can look at rookie autographs, which have generated PSA 10 sales in the several-thousand-dollar range.
Our preferred buy: True Chrome Refractor #251.
Budget buy: Base PSA 10 around the $300 level.
Risk: Rookie hype. Flagg still needs the career to justify today's prices.
2026 Rating: 9.2/10
5. Paul Skenes — 2024 Topps Chrome Update Rookie
Cards to Target
2024 Topps Chrome Update #USC88
Refractors
Gold /50 and other numbered parallels
Pitchers historically carry more investment risk than superstar hitters, largely because injuries can dramatically alter a career.
Skenes may be one of the exceptions worth considering.
He's become one of baseball's most recognizable young stars, which gives collectors a rare opportunity: buying a pitcher who generates genuine mainstream hobby demand.
There's also a massive price ladder.
Recent PSA 10 base Chrome Update rookies have sold around $125-$160, while a Gold Speckle /50 PSA 10 has generated sales in the thousands.
That gives collectors plenty of options depending on risk tolerance.
Our preferred buy: Numbered Topps Chrome Update rookie.
Budget buy: PSA 10 Chrome Update.
Risk: Pitcher injury risk is considerably higher than it is for position players.
2026 Rating: 8.9/10
6. Luka Dončić — 2018 Panini Prizm Silver #280
If you're buying Luka, we'd skip straight past most mass-produced base cards and target one of the defining modern basketball cards:
2018 Panini Prizm Silver #280.
Luka is already established enough that this isn't purely a prospect purchase, but he's young enough to have significant career-defining accomplishments still ahead of him.
That is an attractive combination.
PSA 10 copies of the Prizm Silver have recently traded around $1,600-$1,775.
Meanwhile, the base Prizm PSA 10 trades at a fraction of that amount.
That spread is exactly why collectors increasingly need to pay attention to card quality rather than simply player quality.
If Luka becomes one of the defining players of his era, we'd rather own one strong Silver than a stack of base rookies.
Our preferred buy: Prizm Silver PSA 10.
Risk: Basketball cards are highly sensitive to playoff narratives and championship expectations.
2026 Rating: 8.8/10
7. Aaron Judge — 2017 Topps Chrome #169
Cards to Target
2017 Topps Chrome #169
Refractor
Prism Refractor
Image Variation
Judge has gradually moved from superstar into something more interesting for collectors: a player building a legitimate historical résumé.
That changes the investment thesis.
Instead of asking whether Judge will become good enough to matter, collectors can increasingly ask where he will ultimately rank among the great power hitters of baseball history.
Standard PSA 10 Topps Chrome #169 rookies have recently sold largely in the $400s, while PSA 10 Chrome Refractors have traded around $1,100+.
The image variation is another compelling option for collectors looking for something scarcer than the standard rookie.
Our preferred buy: Chrome Refractor PSA 10.
Budget buy: Standard Chrome PSA 10.
Risk: Judge is older than many names on this list, meaning there are fewer years left for his résumé to expand.
2026 Rating: 8.7/10
8. Anthony Edwards — 2020 Panini Prizm Silver #258
Anthony Edwards has developed something every sports-card investor should care about:
collectability beyond statistics.
Personality, highlights, playoff moments, endorsements and cultural relevance all matter in the hobby.
Edwards has the potential to become one of basketball's defining personalities, not merely an excellent player.
And the pricing difference between his cards creates an interesting opportunity.
A standard Prizm PSA 10 has recently traded around the low hundreds, while Prizm Silver PSA 10s have generated sales around $1,000-$1,200.
Again, our preference is scarcity over quantity.
Our preferred buy: Prizm Silver PSA 10.
Budget alternative: Fast Break Variation or desirable color Prizm.
Risk: His cards can move dramatically based on playoff performance and short-term NBA hype cycles.
2026 Rating: 8.6/10
9. LeBron James — 2003 Topps Chrome #111
Now we're entering true blue-chip territory.
The 2003 Topps Chrome LeBron James #111 is one of the defining basketball cards of the modern era.
It has several qualities we love:
-
Instantly recognizable
-
True rookie-year significance
-
Massive collector base
-
Global athlete
-
Strong liquidity
-
Established historical importance
PSA 10 copies were producing sales around $15,000-$18,000 during portions of summer 2026, including a $15,000 sale in August.
That isn't inexpensive.
Collectors don't necessarily need a PSA 10, however.
A strong PSA 8 or PSA 9 can provide access to essentially the same iconic card at a much lower entry point.
For a long-term collection, we'd rather own an important LeBron rookie in a slightly lower grade than a much less important card solely because it says PSA 10 on the label.
Our preferred buy: Highest grade comfortably within your budget.
Risk: At this stage you're buying an established collectible, so explosive percentage gains may be harder than with younger players.
2026 Rating: 8.5/10
10. Michael Jordan — 1986 Fleer #57
No sports-card list feels complete without it.
The 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan #57 is arguably the benchmark basketball card of the modern collecting era.
Jordan doesn't need another championship.
He doesn't need another MVP.
He doesn't need another statistical milestone.
The investment thesis is simply that Michael Jordan is likely to remain one of the most collected athletes in the world for generations.
That's a very different proposition than speculating on a 21-year-old prospect.
For most collectors, PSA 7 and PSA 8 copies represent a more realistic target than PSA 9 or 10.
And because counterfeit copies of the Jordan rookie are common, authentication is especially important.
Our preferred buy: PSA 7 or PSA 8 with strong eye appeal.
Risk: The upside is likely steadier than speculative modern cards. You're paying for established importance.
2026 Rating: 8.5/10

The Bigger Lesson: Buy the Card, Not Just the Player
One of the biggest mistakes collectors can make in 2026 is identifying the right athlete but buying the wrong card.
Modern superstars can have thousands of different cards.
That doesn't mean thousands of those cards will become desirable long-term collectibles.
When we're evaluating cards, we generally prefer:
Rookie year > later-year card
Flagship product > obscure product
Refractor/Silver > base
Serial numbered > artificially rare-looking parallel
On-card autograph > sticker autograph
Licensed card > unlicensed card
Iconic photograph/design > forgettable design
And for modern cards in particular:
Scarcity matters.
A PSA 10 label does not automatically make a card rare.
For example, Cooper Flagg's 2025-26 Topps Chrome base PSA 10 population had already reached 4,393 by September 6, 2026.
That's why we'd often rather spend more for one legitimately scarce parallel than accumulate numerous high-population base cards.
What We'd Buy With Different Budgets
Under $500
Look at cards such as:
-
Cooper Flagg Topps Chrome PSA 10
-
Paul Skenes Topps Chrome Update PSA 10
-
Anthony Edwards Prizm PSA 10 or selected parallels
-
Aaron Judge Topps Chrome PSA 10
-
Lower-cost Ohtani rookie alternatives
This price point offers tremendous liquidity and makes it easier to diversify.
$500-$2,500
This may be the sweet spot in the hobby.
Instead of buying the most expensive players' base cards, start targeting:
-
Refractors
-
Silver Prizms
-
Numbered parallels
-
Short prints
-
Lower-grade iconic vintage/modern cards
This is where scarcity begins becoming much more meaningful.
$2,500+
At this level we'd become increasingly selective.
Consider:
-
Wembanyama Prizm Silver PSA 10
-
Mahomes premium rookies
-
Ohtani numbered Chrome rookies
-
Cooper Flagg Chrome Refractors and autos
-
LeBron Topps Chrome
-
Michael Jordan Fleer
The more money you're spending, the more important population, eye appeal, provenance and historical significance become.
Final Thoughts
Sports cards can be incredibly fun to collect, but they shouldn't be treated like guaranteed investments.
Player performance changes.
Collector tastes change.
Populations increase.
Products fall in and out of favor.
The cards we like most for 2026 generally share one characteristic: there is a clear reason collectors should still care about them 10 or 20 years from now.
That's why our list combines younger upside plays such as Cooper Flagg, Victor Wembanyama and Paul Skenes with established names such as Shohei Ohtani, Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
Buy athletes you believe collectors will remember.
Then buy the best version of their card that your budget allows.
That's a much stronger strategy than simply chasing whatever is hottest this week.
Card prices referenced in this article are examples of recent reported sales as of September 2026 and can change rapidly. Sports cards are collectibles, not guaranteed financial investments.
